The Kidde 889D-AW is an explosion-proof DC-powered AdaptahornÆ vibrating horn for hazardous-location fire alarm signaling. Specifically, it is the 20–24 VDC variant of the Edwards 888D/889D Adaptahorn family. As a result, it provides distinctive audible alarms where high ambient noise and classified atmospheres rule out standard horns.
First, the 889D-AW includes an internal series diode for signal-circuit supervision. Then, two of its three leads carry alarm power while the third returns to the next appliance or end-of-line device. Therefore, the horn drops cleanly into a supervised fire alarm notification circuit.
In addition, the heavy-duty vibrating mechanism produces 100 dBA at 10 ft, A-weighted, in an anechoic chamber. However, that is laboratory-quiet conditions — real-world sound levels in reverberant spaces vary. Furthermore, the horn mounts to any solid surface with two fasteners.
